The HD Archives is guessing this is THE first HD produced based on the fact that “1″ is stamped on a few pieces of the bike. Unfortunately, at the time, standards & practices were not in place to actually track motorcycles like we do now in the modern age. Some critics point to the location of the motor mounts as proof this is not THE #1.
I highly recommend that if anyone is even remotely near the Milwaukee area to head to the HD Museum (www.hdmuseum.com). It’s a great way to see how far HD and America has progressed in the last 110 years.
Also….head down to Chicago and visit the Chicago Science and Industry Museum (www.msichicago.org). Who doesn’t want to lay eyes on one of Craig Breedlove’s record setting salt flat machines?
