My Church

May 15th, 2012

I love seeing dedication to a brand. For Allan, this dedication is evident when he opens his garage for you to view his collection. Packed away in a seemingly small garage is his collection of Datsuns and Nissans. The fire in his eyes light up when he starts to talk about his 510′s and the journey they have taken him on. He has restored some of them a few times over and has been through many different engine and suspension setups to get where he is today. In talking with Allan you know he has been over every square inch of his cars and that those square inches of development have brought him an almost zen-like state. Spiritual enlightenment comes in many different forms. For some that comes in a church, others in nature, and for others in their garage as they further the vision and dreams they hold for their cars. The car world as a whole is a much better place because of these people. My hat to you, Allan.

Depth of Speed Season 02 is underway…

MIA

May 15th, 2012

I have been missing in action for a few days but only to bring you great content! It has been an incredibly wild ride here in Southern California and our time is about to come to an end. We will be in Arizona shortly and will continue to strive to highlight the automotive passion that exists in us all.

Here is a still from the latest episode of Depth of Speed which will be airing tomorrow.

Shot of the Day

May 9th, 2012

This car caused a lot of neck aches today. Everywhere we went peoples necks would crane and look at this beast roaming the streets. Also mine from the immense amount of power being put down to the wheels. Today was a good day.

Track Day

May 7th, 2012

The time has come to open the floodgates of video release. For this first short I had the opportunity to get out on the track at Miller Motorsports Park with a JDM Legends car. As the last step before a client flew from California to pick up the car, Eric was able to line up some track time for a shakedown of the car. The new owner was flying over in a week to pick up the car and drive it back and Eric wanted to make sure it would have no problems on the way back. No better way to test the worthiness of a car then throwing it on the track! I was able to tag along and film this monster for a few hours. I must say, the sound of this car is worthy of its looks and is a sound I won’t soon forget.

Top Automotive Highlight

May 3rd, 2012

Today I reached an extremely high point in my automotive career. This morning I was able to shoot a 1957 300SL Gullwing out at an airstrip thanks to a very gracious host who wrangled everything together and a very kind owner. After we wrapped up shooting the owner turned to me and asked if my wife and I wanted to take it for a spin up the airstrip. Not one to turn down the highlight of my automotive career, I nervously took the keys and blasted up the runway to the beautiful sound of the straight six. The Nardi wheel was giant(factory option) and I could only think of the drivers running these beautiful machines for hours upon hours in the 24 hour races.

We still have another location to shoot and will have this video up in the next week.

I very much don’t look the part to be able to drive one and should have put my hat back on. The joys of early morning shoots.

On The Road

May 3rd, 2012

We finally did it. It took a lot of work to pack up our apartment into a storage unit, quit our jobs, and get our trailer ready to go. To top it all off I had a video shoot in Las Vegas all last week which contributed to the hectic nature of our move. Finally we were able to say goodbye to our friends, family, and last but not least, my BMW 2002. We left a lot later than expected yesterday afternoon but finally hit the road at 4pm. We drove until 11pm last night and stayed in the booming mine town of Tonopah, NV as our first official night in the trailer. Right now we are parked on the western edge of California in a small town and have a special shoot lined up for first thing in the morning. Stay tuned for some behind the scenes shots of tomorrow’s shoot.

The Time Cometh

April 22nd, 2012

The time is fast approaching and I cannot believe it. Come May 1st, our time from the past few years will change in a whirlwind. There will be no more 9-5 jobs, an apartment, or commitments to attend to. On May 1st all of our belongings will be in storage and we will set out on our long planned journey to travel the country in our trailer and film automotive enthusiasts. So much time has been spent watching people fulfill their passion and dreams and now we are ready to follow ours. We have been planning on this for over a year now and we will begin to live our dream. Lots of preparation has happened over the past few months. We have spent a lot of time deciding on the right trailer, packing our stuff up, moving 401k’s, getting insurances(health,rv,production), and planning our routes. Here is what is planned so far….

Las Vegas – May 1-3rd
LA – May 5-15th
Phoenix – May 17-20th
Albuquerque – May 22-24th
Dallas/Austin/Houston – May 29th-June 12th
New Orleans – June 15-19th

The dates are a bit flexible and if a great story comes up we may change up the route a bit to capture it. If you have any ideas, stories, or suggestions for anything along our route please contact me. If there is a shop, museum, or store we need to see, please let me know. If you want to meet up for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or coffee, we would love to meet new people. You can send me an email, post on Facebook, or tweet at me.

Depth of Speed Season 02 is coming up quick. Stay tuned for many videos, photos, and posts of our travels! I am adding some new short videos this season and am constantly looking for cool cars to film if you are too nervous to get in front of the camera.

If you are curious this is what we finally settled on…Hopefully we will see you soon!

And here is my dirty self after traveling to Colorado Springs recently to pick up our trailer.

The Flower of Scotland

January 26th, 2012

For Speed Week 2011, I had the opportunity to follow around Speed Scotland and their attempt to break the 300mph club out at Bonneville. It was incredible to watch them work through so much adversity and punishment that the salt can dish out in their attempts to reach their dreams. It takes months to get the car ready, weeks to ship it over, and another week to get it out to Bonneville. For one week out of the year they can try and make this possible and it was an incredible experience to be a part of the learning curve Bonneville demands. It takes a lot of tenacity to run out at the salt and when you pair up traveling halfway across the globe, it becomes a major undertaking.

The Study of Beetles Continued…

December 30th, 2011

There is a lot to be said of a clean, daily driven, stock bug. There is also a lot to be said about non-stock, daily driven, bug and today we see the latter. I see these beetles on the way to my local 7-11 when I need a break from editing and the computer. Since they are parked in front of two neighboring houses, I always wonder if they belong to the same person? With the inclusion of the Jetta in the driveway, I am inclined to believe that they probably do. Unless the sickness has spread amongst neighbors which happens often.

As much as I love a clean vehicle, I very much admire patina or even rust. Anything that denotes a car that is used and driven gains my utmost respect. I am sure that it may bother(the temptation to use bug was strong) some people but for me mismatched panels, rust, dings, and dents all hold a special place in my heart. It is like a well worn floor or leather, sure it may be discolored in some places or have scratches in others, but it signifies history and a journey. It could be the journey of sourcing parts and fixing your car, the journey your mind takes when you sit in a certain car(vintage BMW leather will always take me back to my E12), or even the journeys your car takes you on. There is something to be said about stock or non-stock, clean or rusted, and hopefully as collective automotive enthusiasts we can agree on one thing, that we can see that passion abounds in all circles of this automotive life.

The Study of Beetles

December 29th, 2011

Where I live seems to be a reflection of my personality. I live in an older neighborhood which hearkens back to a time where quality and craftsmanship seemed paramount and things were used and lovingly worn. Everything in this neighborhood has withstood the test of time. The houses, the trees, the sheds, the garages, and most importantly, the cars. If you are like me then this is no accident, I choose to live where I do based on its surroundings and those surroundings meeting my needs. Call me crazy, but the old cars that people continue to drive have partly influenced my decision to live here. When I drive to the local store or gas station I am constantly scanning the roads for cars and I mentally note where they are so that I can return and admire. Needing a free moment away from the computer, I picked up my camera to document these mental notes.

Like everything in life there is a bit of ebb and flow when it comes to the cars that speak the most to me at a particular moment. In these particular moments the sights and sounds of air cooled vehicles have been at the forefront of the brain. My desire is to pick up a VW Beetle, lower it, and cruise around to the unique and beautiful sound that radiates from the back have constantly been swirling around my head. These days we are gearing up for our trip around the country so these ideas and passions must be put on hold. The next best thing to do is pick up the camera and document those who are currently fulfilling my dream. Here is part one in “The Study of Beetles”.
